A dismantled Blakely gun lies in the foreground of this 1865 view of the East Battery in Charleston, South Carolina. Blakely rifles were British-made cannon that Confederate forces used for coastal defense. Confederate troops evacuated Charleston in February 1865 as Union forces closed in, leaving the city's waterfront batteries for the victors to see. The stereograph was made by David B. Woodbury, and its paired halves give the guns and the harbor a sense of depth.
