A wrecked Blakely gun, a British-designed rifled cannon that Confederate forces used in coastal defenses, sits at Frazers wharf in Charleston, which sets this view apart from the city's other war scenes. Charleston was evacuated in February 1865 and taken by Union forces, and the Brady-Handy studio recorded the damaged waterfront in the months that followed. The picture was issued as a stereograph, a card meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, a popular format that brought images of the war into parlors across the North.
