Vessels crowd the wharves along the harbor in this 1865 view of Charleston, South Carolina. Confederate forces had evacuated the city in February 1865, and Union troops moved in, so the waterfront of that year was busy with military and supply traffic. The picture is number 3093 in the Civil War Photograph Collection and was issued by the War Photograph and Exhibition Company, which published views of wartime sites for public sale.
