Two glass plates make up this stereograph pair, one for each eye, so that the steamers tied up at the wharf near Charleston appear in three dimensions when viewed through a stereoscope. The city had fallen to Union forces in February 1865, after the Confederate army evacuated, and its harbor and waterfront were central to the war's end. Wet collodion negatives like these were the standard way to record such scenes in the early 1860s. The record notes that the photograph was once attributed to Alexander Gardner, a leading Civil War photographer, though that attribution has since changed.
