Blakely rifled guns, British-built artillery that the Confederacy bought and relied on, are the focus here, with ammunition stacked in the yard of the Charleston arsenal. The photograph dates to 1865, the year Union forces took Charleston, and it records the weapons and munitions left behind as Confederate defenses gave way. Wet collodion glass stereographs like this were made as pairs, so a stereoscope fused the two views into a single image with depth. The picture was published by the War Photographic and Exhibition Company and is now held in the Library of Congress's Civil War collection.
