The administration building at the Charleston Navy Yard anchors one of the Detroit Publishing Company's views of the South Carolina port, taken as the yard was growing into a major Atlantic Coast base. The Navy established the yard on the Cooper River in 1901, and by the 1910s its shops, docks, and offices were expanding to support fleet operations. Detroit Publishing, which made photographs and hand-colored photochrom prints for railroads and travel promoters, often documented federal installations like this one. The picture's 8 by 10 inch glass negative gives it the sharp detail typical of that era's commercial work.
