Two destroyers, USS Tillman (DD 641) and USS Beatty (DD 640), slide down the ways together in this picture, taken at the Charleston, South Carolina, Navy Yard on December 20, 1941. The date fell less than two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, when the Navy was rapidly expanding its fleet and shipyards up and down the coast were working at full speed. Double launchings like this one let a yard send two hulls into the water at once, a practical step in wartime production. The photograph's Navy source number and date come from an old caption card, so they are worth checking against other records.
