This view of the great dry docks at the Charleston Naval Shipyard, on the Cooper River, shows the engineering that let the Navy lift warships fully out of the water for hull repair, cleaning and painting. The yard grew rapidly after the federal government established it in the early twentieth century, and its docks were central to keeping Atlantic Fleet vessels in service. The negative comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely between about 1890 and 1920 recording American cities, industry and public works. Its glass plate format gives the scene a sharp, detailed record of the yard's industrial scale.
