Few images from the end of the war capture Charleston as bluntly as this stereograph of Confederate torpedoes, or naval mines, stacked in the Arsenal yard. Taken in 1865, after Union forces had taken the city, the picture shows the ordnance the Confederates had left behind, with its iron shot and shell laid out in the open. The Charleston Arsenal had been a major military facility, and the scene offers a sobering look at the city's wartime industry. Made as a stereograph pair, the view was meant to be seen in three dimensions through a special viewer.
