Church Street just below Tradd Street gives this view its focus: at left stands No. 71, the house of Colonel Robert Brewton, fronted by a piazza, one of the deep, shaded porches that define Charleston's architecture. The Detroit Publishing Company, which photographed towns and landscapes across the country in the early 1900s, sold views like this one to travelers and armchair tourists who wanted to see the Southern city's old streets. The estimated date of about 1906 places the scene a generation after the 1886 earthquake, when many of the city's historic buildings were still being repaired and rediscovered.
