Buzzards gathered around the Central Market in Charleston, South Carolina, and this glass negative records that odd pairing of commerce and scavengers. The market, a long building on Market Street that had served the city since the 1840s, drew sellers and shoppers, while the black vultures that roamed the city picked at scraps and refuse. Such birds were a familiar part of Southern town life before sanitation improved, and they often perched on rooftops and fences near the stalls. The picture comes from the Detroit Publishing Company, whose photographers traveled widely around 1900 documenting American towns and cities.
