Watermelons give this Charleston market scene its particular character, and the engraving ran on page 197 of *Frank Leslie's Illustrated Newspaper* on December 15, 1866. It was cut from a sketch by J.E. Taylor, and the paper's southern views of the period often recorded street life in cities still recovering from the Civil War. Charleston's produce markets had long been busy places where vendors sold fruit and vegetables directly to households. In the years after emancipation, these markets remained among the most visible centers of local commerce. The picture offers a glimpse of a city in transition, when older market customs continued alongside new questions about who would sell and who would buy.
