Beside the Calhoun Monument, which stands at the left edge of the frame, soldiers drill across Marion Square in Charleston, South Carolina. The square was named for Francis Marion, the Revolutionary War partisan commander, and it had long served the city as an open ground for parades and musters. The Detroit Publishing Company, known for its color and black-and-white views of American towns and landmarks, made this 8 x 10 inch glass negative around 1907. The picture records a traditional military training scene set against a monument to a prominent South Carolina statesman.
