An old gate in Charleston, South Carolina, is the subject here, one of the many entrances that give the city's older streets their character. Charleston's residential blocks were known for gates like this, often set in brick or masonry walls and opening onto gardens and houses hidden from the street. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1907, sold views of American towns and scenery to travelers and publishers in the early twentieth century. The plate later passed to the State Historical Society of Colorado, which received it as a gift in 1949.
