A single gate is the subject of this view of Charleston, made around 1907 as a glass dry plate negative. The Detroit Publishing Company, based in Detroit, produced large numbers of travel views of American towns and scenic sites for tourists, postcards and publishers, and its Charleston series documented the city's streets, gardens and entrances. Glass negatives like this one were the working originals from which prints were made, so the image preserves both the gate and the commercial photography of the early twentieth century. Charleston was already known to visitors for its older architecture and walled gardens, which made such entrances a popular subject.
