This view shows a walkway along the water with cannons standing at its edge, and the record suggests it was taken at East Battery, the seawall promenade on Charleston Harbor. Old artillery pieces were a common sight along the Battery, and the harbor beyond it had long held a strategic place in the country's history, including the Civil War bombardment of Fort Sumter. The negative is a 5 by 7 inch glass plate from the Detroit Publishing Company, which produced many travel views of American cities and landscapes in the decades around 1900. Because the title came from the jacket and the location is only probable, the scene is best read as a typical turn-of-the-century view of Charleston's waterfront.
