The unusual thing about this picture is its form: it is a photograph of a set of photographic prints joined into a panorama, not a direct view of the city. The Detroit Publishing Company, which issued views of American towns and landscapes in the early 1900s, assembled such sequences for sale and for display, and this copy was catalogued under its number 15690. Charleston was a popular subject for the company, a port city with a long waterfront and a dense row of historic buildings that drew tourists. The glass negative's 5 by 7 inch size and its 1949 gift from the State Historical Society of Colorado show how the company's pictures spread to institutions well after they were made.
