Dorchester Inn sat in the Dorchester County countryside near Charleston, and the Library of Congress subject headings place it in Summerville, a pine-shaded town about 20 miles northwest of the city. Summerville grew into a winter and health resort in the late 1800s, drawing visitors from Charleston and beyond who valued its dry, resinous air. The picture is a dry plate glass negative from the Detroit Publishing Company, a firm that between about 1890 and the 1920s produced large numbers of views of American towns, roads, and resorts, often for railroads and travel promotion. Its date, somewhere between 1900 and 1906, rests on the company's own catalog listing from 1906.
