East Battery is a promenade along the Charleston harbor waterfront, lined with grand houses and old cannons, and this view was made around 1906 on a pair of glass negatives from the Detroit Publishing Company. The Battery was built up as a defensive seawall in the 1700s and became one of the city's most fashionable addresses, where elegant residences look out over Charleston Harbor. Detroit Publishing photographers traveled widely to document American scenery and towns for color and black-and-white views sold to the public, so this image captures an early-twentieth-century view of the city's seaside promenade at a moment when tourism was growing.
