Few stereographs of this period name their subject as directly as this one: a school for Black students in Charleston, South Carolina, with girls among those pictured. Benjamin West Kilburn, whose studio was in Littleton, New Hampshire, issued views like this in large numbers for parlor stereoscopes, so the card shows how northern households encountered the postwar South. Schools for formerly enslaved people and their children had expanded rapidly in Charleston after emancipation, many with support from northern missionary societies, and by the 1890s education had become a visible measure of that effort.
