Few places in the war carried more symbolic weight than Fort Sumter, and this stereograph shows a flag-raising there under Brevet Maj. Gen. Robert Anderson, the officer who had surrendered the post in April 1861. Confederate batteries pounded the masonry for much of the war, and Union forces reclaimed the harbor forts in early 1865, so a ceremony at the fort was as much a statement about control of Charleston as a military event. Taken as a pair of plates, the image gives the damaged walls and open ground a sense of depth that a single print cannot.
