Scenes of Black workers in Charleston, South Carolina, were a staple of stereograph publishers in the late 1870s, and this card, titled "Gossiping at the gate," shows a small moment of idle talk rather than hard labor. It was issued by Kilburn Brothers, the Littleton, New Hampshire firm that produced many stereo views of Southern cities in the years after the Civil War. The caption card's subject tracings include pumps, street vendors, cotton, rice, and docks, which point to the port economy that drove the city. Because the record's data comes from an old caption card and has not been fully verified, the exact location and the people shown are best read as part of the wider visual record of the period.
