Few views of Charleston's waterfront from the late 1870s show labor as directly as this stereograph, which pictures African American workers toating rice on the docks. Kilburn Brothers, the Littleton, New Hampshire firm that issued the card as No. 462, produced many such views for a public eager to see the South after the Civil War. Rice had long been one of Charleston's most important exports, grown on lowcountry plantations and shipped through its wharves, so the scene records the physical work that kept that trade moving. The catalog tags also mention pumps and street vendors, hinting at the busy street life around the harbor.
