Cotton drying in the open air at a Charleston warehouse is the particular subject here, a step in processing that depended on outdoor labor. The picture is a stereograph, a pair of nearly identical photographs mounted on card and viewed through a hand stereoscope to produce a three-dimensional effect. Kilburn Brothers, the Littleton, New Hampshire firm that issued this numbered card, was a prominent American publisher of stereoviews in the late nineteenth century. Charleston's economy after the Civil War still rested heavily on cotton and rice, and the caption card's tracings also point to rice, docks and street vendors, though the record itself is unverified.
