A stereograph card from about 1879 shows Black laborers carrying cotton at a Charleston, South Carolina, warehouse, with the bales and loading work set against the city's waterfront trade. Kilburn Brothers, the Littleton, New Hampshire firm that produced many stereo views of American cities and industries, issued it as number 465. In the late 1870s, Charleston was still a major cotton port, and dockside and warehouse labor was central to its economy after the Civil War. The card's caption tags also list rice, docks and street vendors, which point to the wider commercial life of the waterfront. Because the record's data comes from an old caption card and has not been fully verified, the details of the exact scene are best read with that caveat in mind.
