This stereograph shows The Citadel, the South Carolina military college, as seen across Marion Square in Charleston. Its pairing of two glass plates gave viewers a three-dimensional view when seen through a stereoscope, a popular parlor format in the 1860s. The picture was published by E. & H.T. Anthony, one of the leading American makers of such views. Taken in 1865, the year Union forces occupied Charleston after the Confederate evacuation, it records a city and its military institution at the end of the war.
