Charleston's Charleston Hotel, at 200 Meeting Street, is the subject here, shown as a stereograph pair: two side-by-side glass plates that viewed through a stereoscope gave a sense of depth. The photograph dates to 1865, the year Union forces took the city after Confederate troops evacuated it in February. Firms such as E. & H.T. Anthony issued stereographs like this one for a broad public eager to see the war's places and aftermath. The wet collodion process used for the negative required photographers to coat and expose each plate quickly, so the image also reflects the technical limits of the period.
