Two names attach to this view: the negative is labeled the Gresham Hotel, but the Detroit Publishing Company's 1906 catalog lists the same building as the Hotel St. John, a detail worth remembering when searching for it. The company sold views like this one to travelers and publishers across the country, and Charleston drew many visitors in the early 1900s for its historic streets, gardens and mild winters. Hotels like this one housed those visitors and were often photographed as signs of a city working to rebuild its tourist trade after the 1886 earthquake.
