The St. John Hotel was one of the hotels that served visitors to Charleston, South Carolina, in the early 1900s, when the city was drawing more tourists after decades of recovery from the Civil War and the 1886 earthquake. The Detroit Publishing Company, which made this 8 by 10 inch glass negative around 1905, produced many views of American towns and landmarks for travel books, postcards, and promotional material. Its hotel views often show the building's façade and street setting as a sign of a city's comfort and commercial life. The negative is part of the Library of Congress's Detroit Publishing Company Collection.
