A stereograph pair of the house at 48 Elizabeth Street in Charleston, South Carolina, it shows the residence of former governor William Aikens. The photograph was made in 1865, when Union forces had occupied the city after the Confederate evacuation, and wartime views of the ruined and altered city drew wide interest. The image was made with the wet collodion process on glass, and the E. & H.T. Anthony firm published such paired views for viewing through stereoscopes in parlors. Its two plates are the left and right halves of the pair.
