The Mills House, a Charleston hotel, stands scarred by fire in this 1865 view, with Hibernian Hall visible at the left edge. The city suffered repeated blazes during the war, including a major fire in December 1861, and more destruction came as Confederate forces withdrew and Union troops entered in early 1865. Made as a stereograph, the pair of glass negatives was meant to be viewed through a stereoscope, giving the ruined streetscape a sense of depth. The E. & H.T. Anthony firm published the pair, and its stereo views were widely sold in the United States during and after the war.
