Broad Street runs through the heart of old Charleston, and this glass-plate negative, made by the Detroit Publishing Company sometime between 1900 and 1920, captures it looking west toward the city's center. The company's photographers traveled widely to document American towns and streets, producing views that were sold as postcards and lantern slides to a national audience. Charleston, with its layered history as a colonial port and antebellum city, drew particular attention for its old buildings and busy commercial blocks. The negative's 8-by-10-inch size reflects the large-format equipment the company used for its most detailed street scenes.
