The gilded dome rising above the trees marks the State Capitol in Charleston, the building that replaced the earlier capitol after a fire destroyed that structure in 1921. Designed by New York architect Cass Gilbert in a monumental Beaux-Arts style, the new capitol was completed in 1932, and this c1934 view shows it only a few years after its dedication. Charleston had held the seat of state government since 1885, and the building's scale reflected the state's confidence in its permanent home. Look closely at the stone façade and the sweeping approach, which were meant to present state government as dignified and enduring.
