Few fairs of the era were laid out on as grand a scale in the South as the Inter-State and West Indian Exposition, which spread across Hampton Park on the edge of Charleston, South Carolina. This stereograph focuses on the grounds and buildings themselves, with their landscaped walks and exhibition halls giving visitors the impression of a planned city rising among the trees. The fair was meant to encourage trade between the Southern states and the Caribbean and Latin America, and its architecture and gardens helped make that case to investors and visitors alike. Seen through a stereo viewer, the card gives a sense of depth and layout that a flat photograph could not.
