The sleeve title names the Swamp Angel, the 200-pounder Parrott rifle that Union engineers placed in a marsh near Morris Island in 1863 to shell Charleston. The date of 1860 and the pencilled address, 755 Pulaski, suggest the negative shows a city scene from before that gun existed, so the title should be treated as unverified. The negative was made by photographer David B. Woodbury, who died in 1866, and it survives in the Library of Congress's Civil War glass negative collection. Its interest lies in recording Charleston as it stood on the eve of the war, when the city was among the most important ports in the South.
