The Swamp Angel was a Union siege gun, an 8-inch Parrott rifle, set up in a marsh south of Charleston in 1863 to shell the city from a distance. It fired on Charleston for a few weeks before it burst, and this 1865 stereograph records the battery's site after the war. Photographer James F. Gibson made the pair of glass plates during the postwar period, when many Civil War locations were documented for public viewing. Stereographs like this one were meant to be seen through a viewer, which gives the marshy ground and the gun's position a sense of depth.
