This stereograph shows the crew of the U.S.S. *Pawnee* posed on the quarterdeck and starboard battery while the ship lay in Charleston Harbor in 1860. The image survives as a pair of glass negatives, along with a variant view, and it was made by the photographer David B. Woodbury, who worked in Charleston in the years before the war. Pictures like this were taken in the tense months when South Carolina was moving toward secession, and the presence of a Union warship in the harbor was itself a sign of that rising conflict. Look closely at the sailors' arrangement on deck and the guns of the battery, which show how a naval crew was organized and drilled at the time.
