Castle Pinckney, a small brick fort on Shutter's Island in Charleston Harbor, is the subject of this view of its interior, taken in 1865 as the Civil War was ending. The picture survives as a stereograph, a pair of wet collodion glass negatives meant to be seen together through a viewer for a three-dimensional effect. Stereo views like this were popular in the 1860s, and the Union occupation of Charleston after the Confederates abandoned the city in February 1865 drew many photographers there. The record once credited the image to Alexander Gardner, but that attribution is no longer considered reliable.
