Sugar Creek, a small community in Jackson County just east of Kansas City, Missouri, was home in 1909 to a Standard Oil Company (Indiana) refinery that processed crude oil brought in by pipeline and rail. The plant gave the area a industrial anchor at a time when Kansas City was the region's main rail and livestock center, with its stockyards, packinghouses, and grain elevators drawing workers from farms across the Plains. Oil refining in the Midwest had grown quickly after the company's expansion in the early 1900s, and the works supplied kerosene, gasoline, and lubricants to markets from Missouri to the Rockies. Residents of the river bottoms and nearby towns would have known the refinery as the source of steady wages and as a landmark of the growing industrial edge of the city.
