Wentworth Academy in Lexington, Missouri, stood on the bluffs above the Missouri River in 1909, when the town of a few thousand residents in Lafayette County was known as much for its schools as for its river trade. The academy, a private military school founded in 1880, offered boys a structured day of drills, classes and inspections, and it drew cadets from outside the town. Lexington's past was still close at hand, since Union and Confederate forces had fought over the town during the 1861 siege, and its riverfront had long depended on steamboats carrying grain and livestock downstream. Townspeople in 1909 would have counted the academy among the town's leading institutions, alongside its churches and the courthouse square.
