This stereograph shows people from Bethlehem traveling by camel on the road to Jerusalem, a route only about ten kilometers long that pilgrims and townspeople had used for centuries. The card dates to 1919, shortly after British forces had taken Palestine from the Ottoman Empire during the First World War. American publishers issued many such views of the region for home viewers, who used a stereoscope to fuse the two nearly identical images into one three-dimensional scene. The camels and loaded travelers are worth a closer look, since they capture everyday movement on a well-worn road rather than a famous monument.
