Few views of Jerusalem from this high eastern ridge are as wide as this one, which runs about 42 inches across and is printed in albumen on paper. The title appears in German, with a French version, "Panorama de Jerusalem," beneath the image, suggesting it was made for a European audience of travelers and armchair readers. The record dates it to the 1860s, a period when photographers in the Holy Land were assembling several negatives into long panoramas like this one to show the walled city, its domes, and the Kidron Valley in a single sweep. The Mount of Olives was a favored vantage point because it offered an unobstructed view of the Temple Mount and the surrounding slopes.
