David Roberts sketched this view of Jerusalem from the north in April 1839, during the Scottish painter's months-long journey through the Near East. The plate was later lithographed by Louis Haghe and published in London by F.G. Moon as part of The Holy Land, Syria, Idumea, Arabia, Egypt and Nubia, which appeared in parts between 1842 and 1845. Roberts's trip came at a time of rising European interest in biblical sites, and his careful topographical views, printed in color, helped shape how Victorian readers pictured the holy city.
