David Roberts sketched Bethlehem on April 6, 1839, during the Scottish painter's long tour of the Near East, and this color lithograph by Louis Haghe carries that date in its title. The print appeared in the second volume of The Holy Land, published in London in parts between 1842 and 1845, where Haghe's stone-printing rendered Roberts's on-site drawings with a richness of tone that few contemporaries could match. Roberts's Holy Land views were enormously popular with Victorian audiences, who often encountered the sacred sites through such images before they could travel there themselves.
