Bethlehem's market place, pictured here in a color print from around the 1890s, shows a town that drew pilgrims and travelers throughout the late Ottoman period, when the area was still under Ottoman rule. The image is a photochrom, a process that built a color picture from several lithographic stones, one for each hue, over a photographic base. Detroit Publishing Co. distributed such views in America and listed this one in its 1905 catalog as print number 15143. The soft, saturated colors made these views popular with tourists and armchair travelers who wanted to see biblical places in color.
