The stereograph shows the Walls of Jerusalem attraction at the 1904 Louisiana Purchase Exposition in St. Louis, with the great Ferris wheel rising behind it, a juxtaposition typical of the fair's midway. The Exposition drew visitors from around the world and filled its grounds with reconstructions of distant places, so a replica of the ancient Holy City beside a modern amusement machine captured its mix of education and spectacle. H.C. White Company, a stereograph publisher, issued the card in 1904 under copyright, and it was sold to visitors as a souvenir of the fair.
