Few neighborhoods in Jerusalem have been photographed as often as the old Jewish Quarter in the Old City, whose stone lanes and houses were long a center of Jewish life there. This glass negative belongs to the George Grantham Bain Collection, the large body of news pictures made by Bain News Service, which sent photographers around the world in the early twentieth century and sold their prints to newspapers. The record gives no date, and its title comes from caption cards that were not verified, so the exact year and vantage point remain uncertain. Even so, the picture offers a useful glimpse of a crowded, weathered quarter at a time when Jerusalem drew steady attention from Western readers.
