Jaffa Gate takes its name from the road that led west toward the port of Jaffa, and it is one of the main entrances into the walled Old City of Jerusalem. Suleiman the Magnificent had the city walls rebuilt in the 1530s, and the gate has carried pilgrims, traders and travelers through its stone passage for centuries. The Bain News Service, a New York picture agency, issued this glass negative, but the record gives no firm date, so it is best read as a view of the gateway from the years the agency was active.
