Jaffa Gate is one of the main entrances in the walls of Jerusalem's Old City, opening on the west side toward the port of Jaffa, and the street that led to it, Jaffa Road, was a busy route between the old city and the newer districts beyond. The Bain News Service, a New York photo agency, produced this glass negative as part of its large collection of images from around the world. The original caption is unverified, so the exact date and vantage point are uncertain. The scene still shows how the gate's stone walls, built in the 16th century under Ottoman rule, stood against the flow of street traffic and daily life.
