British troops in Jerusalem, as the Bain News Service titled this glass negative, place the scene in the Holy City during the period when British forces held the city after its capture from the Ottoman Empire in December 1917. The record gives no date, and the title comes from unverified caption data, so the exact moment and the soldiers shown are uncertain. Still, the subject ties the picture to a turning point in the First World War, when Jerusalem's surrender to the British ended centuries of Ottoman rule there. Bain's studio made large numbers of such negatives for newspapers and wire services, which helps explain why their captions can be brief and occasionally imprecise.
